Weekend Wandering - Saturday June 17

Saturday Chris and I decided to take a day trip to Highland County so he could show me some of the area where he grew up. The trip through the mountains was beautiful! We stopped at the top of the Shenandoah Mountain and walked through the Confederate Breastworks Interpretative Site. We also visited the family cemetery and some of the family property. Chris pulled some beautiful rocks out of the river that runs through the property.

These signs along the Breastworks Site told some of the experiences of the soldiers through letters written home by one of the soldiers.

We stopped at this church in McDowell that was used as a hospital after for both confederate and union soldiers. Nearby was the site of a mass grave where soldiers from both sides were buried.

On the side of this church were lots of bricks where soldiers carved their initials.

I didn't get any pictures but on the way home we stopped at a little diner and ate some delicious hamburgers steaks and baked beans.

It was a beautiful day and so nice to get away for a little relaxing break.
