A beautiful story of romance and freedom, however, this book is so much more than a simple love story.
Abigail is taken from her family in Judea and sold as a slave to Janus, a wealthy Greek philosopher. However, she is not the meek, submissive servant he expects, and Janus soon discovers Abigail has a fiery, intelligent personality that challenges him and the views he has of societal norms and even of God Himself. As their discussions, debates and sometimes even arguments continue, Janus finds himself falling in love with her, but even more importantly, he begins to seek the God she serves.
Abigail, in turn, thinks highly of Janus but is loyal to the God of her people, and longs to return to her homeland. Janus does not want to lose her and makes her a deal. If after one year, she still wants to return to her family, she will be free to go. However, as a bloody rebellion unfolds at home, Abigail pleads with Janus to let her return to her family sooner. Janus relents and lets her go.
As this story unfolds, it becomes clear that God has a plan and Janus and Abigail each play an integral role in this plan.
