Living With Purpose: Embracing Your Unique Mission in Life

Updated: Jan 24

I read this verse the other day and it really made me stop and think, especially the first part of it. "Now when David had served God's purpose in his own generation." There was a specific and unique purpose for David's life. He was here for a reason.

There are other places in the Bible, both in the Old Testament and the New, where individual purpose is mentioned.

God had this to say to Moses - But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth. ~ Exodus 9;16

In Esther 4 Mordecai says to Esther "who knows but you have come to your royal position for such a time as this."

God told Jeremiah this, " Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. ~ Jeremiah 1:5

We also have record of Paul having a personal assignment - " 'What shall I do, Lord?' I asked. 'Get up,' the Lord said, 'and go into Damascus. There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.' ~ Acts 22:10

And this is what Paul tells King Agrippa that God said to him - But rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and those in which I will appear to you. ~ Acts 26:16

Purpose - You Have One Too

You are one of the noblest of God's creations. His intent is that your life be gloriously beautiful regardless of your circumstances. As you are grateful and obedient, you can become all God calls you to be. ~ Richard G. Scott

There is a reason you and I are here on this earth!

We are made in God's image, with a purpose -

Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. ~ Genesis 1:26-27

There was work prepared in advance for each of us to do -

For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. ~ Ephesians 2:10

The highest purpose for each of us is to love God and love others -

And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your heart and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these. ~ Mark 12:30-31

We are equipped with a variety of different gifts and talents with expectation that we would use them in the service of others, empowered by God's grace -

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them; if prophesy, according to your faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in his generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. ~ Romans 12:6-8

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. to Him be the glory and power for ever and ever. Amen. ~ 1 Peter 4:10-11

He has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before times eternal, ~ 2 Timothy 1:9

So, after looking at all of these verses and examples of persona calling on the lives of others, I believe we have to conclude that there is a definite personal and unique purpose for and unique calling on each of our lives. And we are created in such a way that our deepest joy comes from living within that calling.

Your kingdom calling is so unique that it won't be replicated in anyone else. ~ Tim Challies
